The Butterfly Tree
Anki King, Artist
Trees symbolize growth. And the color Blue is a symbol of trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence and truth. It is the color of the sky and sea and considered beneficial to the mind and body. Butterflies are a powerful representation of positive transformation of life. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing change, endurance, hope, and life.
Created with a solid core of aluminum, I wound natural wood reeds colored with natural dyes. The hundreds of butterflies have been created using feathers painted as butterfly wings. Spanning both balconies, the Butterfly Tree measures 18 feet in height and 15 feet in width.
My sculpture Butterfly Tree seeks to partner all of these elements to create a vision of the bounties of Nature evoking growth, wellness and positivity/optimism.
Butterflies in the Garden
Anki King placed beautiful handmade butterflies throughout the garden area to allow for an even more enchanting presence.
The Butterfly Tree seeks to welcome all and provide a moment of pause for all to view, ponder and enjoy.
Staff, patients, and families who are enjoying the gardens can come across butterflies in the trees and plants beside them.
Montefiore physician, Curator Jodi Moise, and artist Anki King speak about the piece just after completing the final installation.
